Thing 23:Next steps

Image
When I began these 23 things digital badges I said I was going to finish them and today is that day. Yippee, I feel accomplished.I began this journey in October so it has taken me 7 months to complete them but its not about how long it took it is about what I have learned . Looking back at my self assessment in Thing 3 I scored myself- Capability 3, Confidence 3 and  Relevance 3.So I felt I was really average and had a long way to go for improvement . Today I reflected on how far I had come and what skills I have gained. I now feel I score this: I scored myself 13.That is an increase of 4 marks. All areas have improved especially my capability,I would not have been able to do the Eco schools collation of resources if I hadn't done these badges and increased my digital learning.I have enjoyed doing the badges through E-learning and nobody put pressure on me to complete these badges except myself.People at work now ask me things about SSSC badges and digital questions which I find

Thing 22:Improving outcomes

Image
For this badge I was to look at how technology can improve outcomes for people who use social services, in my case the children who attend our school. With the present climate we live in technology has been a saving grace. From the point of the staff recording lessons and the children taking part in these lessons at home through Zoom. Emailing timetables to parents to minimise users at the centre at one time. Showing the parents the therapy that the staff do at the school for the parents to watch back and give their child the stretches they require on a daily basis. This has a positive impact on both the children's learning and physical wellbeing. It also helps the Teachers, EYPs, OTs, PTs and Speech and Language  staff to still be able to do their jobs to support development of the holistic child and young user.  I looked at different types of digital technology we could use to improve the outcome for our users. I did not know what the Internet of Things was (IoT) so I searched on

Thing 21:Digital Legacy

Image
Thing 21 -Digital Legacy These are the questions I have been asking myself whilst completing this badge. What will happen to all the information I have put online once I die ? Should I put someone in charge of this, either to keep things updated or delete? Who would this person be ? Who would I trust enough to give this person access to not only my social media accounts but my bank accounts ? I began this badge by watching the video https://digitallegacyassociation.org/   and reading the article at  https://www.lawscot.org.uk/members/journal/issues/vol-60-issue-03/our-digital-afterlife/ published in the journal of the law society of Scotland. I would never be looking after anyone in my present job who would need help with their digital legacy so I was looking at this from the point of view of what I have online and what would happen to all this information after I die. Also I may have a career change in the future so this information is helpful. I then downloaded the digital legacy ass

Thing 20:Collaboration

Image
For Thing 20:Collaboration I was to contribute to a shared document, take part and set up a poll and then blog about my experience. Firstly I was to contribute to a shared document on either Padlet or Google Docs. The purpose of these documents is to build a bank of advice for future 23 Things participants.Firstly to get access to these documents I had to email sssclearningtech@sssc.uk.com to be sent a link. I sent a email for both Padlet and Google Docs and received the activation links within 1 hour. I began by going into Google Docs which was easy to navigate around and easy to put my comments on.I commented on 3 questions on this document. I then had a look at Padlet which I thought looked nicer than Google Docs but a little harder to put on my posts. I added a post but then realised I hadn't signed in so I signed in and then added another post. Then I played about with the document for a bit and was able to jazz up what I had written by making a bookmark from it.  Here is a li

Thing 19 Apps #2

Image
For badge 19 I am looking at two apps ,Notes and Coggle. I have previously used the notes app on my phone but not as fully as it was designed to be used.I had only used it previously to take some notes when trying to write some poems. I went back into notes on my phone and experimented a little more with it.I added a picture which was a little harder than just making a random list. I don't really like using writing apps on my phone as they are a little small to see. I then went on my home computer and looked at Coggle. I had never heard of this app before but it was easy to find and only one click to my hotmail account and that was me signed up. I decided to try and make a mind map on Developing our outdoor space as that is my priority one at work just now. Although there were not many instructions I just explored with it until I felt comfortable with how to guide myself around it. I was actually surprised as this was something in the SSSC badges that I saw and thought I would hate

Thing 18 Social Media #2

Image
I began this badge by looking at  https://www.theguardian.com/social-care-network/2014/jul/10/social-care-social-media-digital-tools which is an old article from 2014.It looks at what is holding the sector back and states that " while social services may not have their own Twitter accounts, increasingly the people that lead them do". I  would agree that in 2014 our sector didn't have its own media presence but that has changed over the years, especially over the last few months. It probably was out of fear of data protection  and confidential issues but that has been overcome now with a more different concern. How can we reach these parents and children ? My organisation always had a Facebook page open to the public and sought permission from parents what childrens pictures could go on it.It also has a friends of page which is a locked group for parents to talk and discuss things. It now has a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and staff members on LinkedIn. We are telling sto

17:Open Educational Resources

Image
So what is an Open Educational Resource, an OER for short? A OER is a way to allow wide range access to a range of digital education materials that are free of restrictions such as copyright. Anyone can copy, use, adapt and re-share them. By using OERs you can adapt them to be relevant to your place of work or to the place you plan to use it. It saves time as the work has already been done for you. Most places only require you to give appropriate credit and that if you do change anything that you let them know. Such as when using the SSSC OER they ask that you give credit, provide a link and indicate any changes made. I have used some OERs in my workplace such as from the  https://open.ed.ac.uk/edinburghs-oers/ were I used  https://www.open.edu/openlearn/nature-environment/natural-history/ispot-sharing-nature/content-section-0?active-tab=description-tab to help me find ways that the children at my centre could record and measure the biodiversity within our school grounds.
